Gallstone Remedies

Your gallbladder collects bile, which is secreted by the liver. Bile is a high cholesterol fluid that helps your intestinal system break food down for easier digestion. Gallstones are formed when there is too much cholesterol in the bile and the tiny globules grow, as large as an egg in some cases. You may not even realize you have gallstones unless they start to cause pain, normally because a gallstone has gotten stuck in a bile duct, which blocks the flow of the bile.

  1. Low Fat Diet

    • Because gallstones are caused by too much fat and cholesterol in most cases, changing your diet to a low fat diet and losing weight can sometimes help relieve the symptoms. This works in some cases, but is not the surest of gallstone remedies.

    Laparoscopic Surgery

    • Laparoscopic surgery is performed by making four slits about an inch long each. A small periscope is inserted to the abdomen through one slit so the surgeon can view the gallbladder. The other three slits allow the doctor to work with special instruments to remove the gallbladder. The surgery involves an overnight stay in the hospital, normally. This is often called Band-Aid surgery, but it is the most drastic of gallstone remedies. However, surgery to remove the gallbladder does prevent the formation of new gallstones.

    Prescription Drugs

    • There are some prescription drugs that are meant to shrink or dissolve the gallstones over a period of months or years. These medications work in about 20 percent of the cases. The gallstones may return if the medication stops being taken.

    Natural Remedies

    • Some people have had success treating gallstones with natural remedies, such as a daily concoction of olive oil, lemon juice and a small piece of garlic. Black seed oil is another liver cleansing product to try daily. You can also try 2 tsps. of lecithin granules on a daily basis. Turmeric, raw beetroot juice, radishes, limes, apples, pears, grapefruits and chamomile or cleavers tea are other gradual natural gallstone remedies.

    One Day Flush

    • For one day eat only organic apples, preferably green apples, or raw apple juice up to one pint. That evening, before you go to bed, warm 2/3 cup of virgin olive oil to body temperature and mix it with one 1/3 cup of lemon juice. Sip the mixture and go straight to bed, lying on your right side with your right leg drawn up. In the morning, you should pass any gallstones. You may have to repeat the procedure several times, especially if you have multiple gallstones.

    Symptoms

    • Usually, you will experience a steady pain in your right side. You may also have nausea, vomiting and fever. Acute gallstone attacks often happen after a large or fatty meal, so avoiding these types of meals is still the best of the gallstone remedies. This is where the foods you eat are important, and staying on low fat, low cholesterol diets can keep you from becoming a chronic sufferer of gallstones and also help avoid the necessity of having your gallbladder removed.
