What Foods Have Vitamin B17?

Vitamin B17, which also goes by the names amygdalin and laetrile, is a nutrient that is found in abundance from a number of different food sources. Many of these are foods that are readily available from your local grocery or farmers market. Outlined below are some of the foods that have Vitamin B17.

  1. Fruit

    • The flesh of many different fruits such as apples, apricots, peaches and quince are good sources of the B17 vitamin. Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and cranberries are also rich in b17. Homemade fruit juices, smoothies and fruit salads are two different ways in which these fruits may be added to your diet.

    Seeds

    • The seed kernels of a number of fruits, as well as the oil pressed from them, are a good source of vitamin B17. Apricot seeds are an especially rich source of this vitamin. Other fruits that bear B17-rich seeds include peaches, nectarines, cherry and prunes. Many of these seeds can be purchased in a naturally-dried form at health food stores. They can be added to your diet by sprinkling the dried seed over salads or baking recipes, or you can simply eat the fruit complete with its seeds. The oil from these seeds can be used as a salad dressing.

    Nuts

    • Bitter almonds are nuts that contain particularly high levels of B17. Other nuts that contain this vitamin include cashews, macadamia nuts, pecans and walnuts. They can be roasted and eaten as snacks, added to baking recipes or added to stir-fries to add a crunch while providing a source of B17.

    Grains and Tubers

    • These are another type of food containing vitamin B17, and include brown rice, barley, buckwheat and millet. Flour made from these grains can be used for baking goods or added to chicken and fish dishes to add a nutty flavor, added to soups as a thickener, among other cooking uses. Yams, sweet potatoes and cassava are a good source of vitamin B17, and make versatile ingredients for side dishes.

    Shoots and Sprouts

    • Bamboo shoots are an excellent source of Vitamin B17, which can also be found in bean sprouts. These can be eaten raw as a snack or added to your vegetable salads or stir-fries. They may also be added to soups and stews.

    Legumes and Leafy Greens

    • Legumes such as lentils, lima beans, fava beans and garbanzo beans are good dietary sources of the B17 vitamin. Spinach, kale and other leafy greens can also contain vitamin B17 and can be added to your diet as a source of the vitamin.
