Accutane is a prescription medication for severe acne. It is a form of vitamin A, and it reduces the amount of oil released by oil glands of the skin. Accutane causes the skin to become thinner, which can cause increased sensitivity to the sun. Waxing and facial services are also prohibited by those using accutane. There are several side effects and cons to taking accutane.

  1. Accutane and Pregnancy

    • Using accutane during pregnancy can cause serious birth defects. Birth defects associated with accutane include, enlargement of the spaces in the brain, small head and brain, mental retardation, cleft lip, ear and eye abnormalities, and heart defects. Before they can even obtain accutane, women of childbearing age must sign a consent form and agree to take two forms of birth control while on the drug.

    Dryness

    • Another con to using accutane is severe dryness. Side effects that are common with accutane are peeling skin, dry skin and painful chapped lips. The nose may also become dry and lead to nosebleeds. Sun sensitivity and rashes may also occur. The throat can become dry and itchy, and eyes and lips can become inflamed.

    Internal Side Effects

    • Internal side effects are also a possible con of using accutane. According to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, accutane has been reported to cause depression. Headaches and muscle aches can also develop with the use of accutane, and joint and bone pain have also been associated with the drug.

    Accutane and Waxing

    • Accutane can make the skin thinner, which can be a big con for those who enoy going to the spa. Waxing is exfoliating and can rip layers of thin skin off. This can cause serious injury and scarring. Facials and spa treatments can irritate the skin and cause pain and redness. Clients taking accutane should avoid these types of services.

    Rare Side Effects

    • Lesser side effects from accutane can also be severe. Rare side effects include heart attack, stroke, stomach ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease and pink eye. Nausea and sudden blindness are also rare side effects from taking accutane.
