If you enjoy the tranquility and culture of the golf course, you may be interested in a permanent position. Golf courses offer a wide range of employment opportunities, each with its own benefits.

Starters

Starters are responsible for making sure everything on the course runs smoothly. As a starter, you keep time and tee records, keep order on the green, and generally assist customers. Working outdoors, interacting with other golfers, and being in-the-know when it comes to anything on the green are all benefits of this job.

Rangers

Rangers have a similar job to starters in maintaining smooth game play. Rangers ride around the course, keeping track of the golfers, keeping time and answering questions. Working this job means you get to be outside, use game expertise and interact with other golfers.

Maintenance

Golf course maintenance crews are responsible for keeping up the natural side of the course. Benefits of this job include being able to work outdoors, and dealing with varied, and often specialized landscaping work. In addition, this job usually runs from early in the morning until 1 or 2 p.m., which means you have most of the afternoon free.

Mechanics

Golf courses usually hire a team of mechanics. The advantages of this job could include flexible schedules, varied responsibilities from day to day, and the option to work outside on the green.

Customer Service

Golf courses usually include a service sector. Whether you work the gift shop, the dining room or with marketing and promotion, the benefits of service-oriented jobs are similar. Generally, the money (through tips or salaries) is competitive, and the work involves less physically straining activities than maintenance (although wait jobs can be physically taxing).

Considerations

All of these jobs include a few similar benefits. Because golf courses are centered around the green, many of these jobs are held outside in beautiful, or at least weather-friendly, locations. Also, if you enjoy golf, a position on a course often means free membership, access to golf equipment during off-hours, and immersion in the golf community. Finally, if you land a job on a high-end course, you may get to see famous players during tours.

Potential

If you are already a seasoned golfer, you may be able to find a position as a teacher. While golf tutors are rarely hired by the course, preferring to work freelance instead, this job does include the aforementioned benefits of a golf course job.
