What Is Bohemian Clothing?

Many designers and fashion magazines tout the appeal of bohemian clothing. It may not be right for the investment banker in the boardroom, but it's perfect for an afternoon music festival in a field or a stroll through a farmer's market. Bohemian clothing is feminine and funky, loose and relaxed, casual and charming. It's never really out of style. You can incorporate boho-chic touches into your wardrobe, or go for the full bohemian look.

  1. Influences

    • Bohemian clothing is associated with the hippie movement of the 1960s and 1970s. It shows influences from gypsy culture and many other world cultures, such as Indian, Asian, African and Native American. These different cultural traditions are melded and reinvented in the boho-chic look.

    Fabrics

    • Bohemian clothes tend to be made from natural fabrics like cotton. Bright colors are common, as are prints and patterns, many of which are ethnically inspired. Fabrics are often beaded or embroidered.

    Cut

    • Bohemian clothes tend to be loose and feminine, with ruffles and layers. Flowing cotton prairie skirts and peasant skirts are bohemian; tailored wool pencil skirts are not. The clothes are meant to flatter a body without being tight or uncomfortable.

    Accessories

    • Accessories are as important to the bohemian look as the clothes themselves. Jewelry tends to be chunky or ethnically inspired. Bags are oversized. Leather sandals are common in the summer, and big boots in the winter.

    Attitude

    • The bohemian look is a laid-back look. It's free-spirited, casual, tossed-on, effortless. It conveys an earthy sexiness, a worldliness and a little bit of whimsy.
