About Computer Printers
A printer is a unit that produces hard copies of documents that are saved electronically. The printer prints these documents using transparencies or paper. Printers are usually attached to a computer with a USB cable. Other printers, such as printers for networks, use wireless connections that various computers can connect to and print documents. There are many types of printers.

Laser Printers
-
The most famous type of printer is the laser printer. Laser printers use lasers in order to produce tones and can be purchased in color or monochrome varieties. Laser printers have a reputation of being high-priced, producing high-quality prints and printing at quick speeds. Although the printers are highly priced, the cost per copy is cheap.
Inkjet Printers
-
Inkjet printers are commonly used in homes and personal offices. Inkjet printers print documents by using various sized droplets of ink onto paper. The general consumer can appreciate an inkjet printer's low cost, great print quality and ease of use. Inkjet printers also are capable of printing in bright vivid colors.

Solid Ink Printers
-
Solid ink printers are sometimes called phase-change printers. Solid ink printers are only produced by Xerox. These printers use a process called thermal transfer. This process uses solid sticks of color that are melted and fed into a print-head. The print head then sprays the ink onto a moving drum, which is then passed over paper. Solid ink printers are commonly found in business offices that print on transparencies.
Photo Printers
-
Color printers that produce images with a color range and resolution equal to photographs are called photo printers. Photo printers can be used with or without a computer by sliding a camera's memory card into the memory card reader slot. There is also a connection for a USB cord. Photo printers are more expensive than basic color printers, but they produce much better photographic prints than any other printer.
Speed
-
Printer speeds can be measured by various methods. Pages per minute, or PPM, is the method that most modern printers use to record a printer's speed. The speed that printers are advertise at is based on a count of office documents produced. These documents are mostly full of text and do not have dense images that require more time to print. The type of paper can also effect a printer's print speed.
