Tracking Systems for Children

Various technologies allow parents to keep track of their children remotely. Devices used for monitoring the location, movements and even the air temperature surrounding the child are available on the current market. Tracking devices for children can be worn as watches, placed in pockets and backpacks or can even be implanted beneath the skin.

  1. GPS

    • The majority of tracking devices made for the purpose of monitoring the whereabouts of children use GPS tracking. The global positioning system, or GPS, uses multiple satellites orbiting the earth to verify the coordinates of a particular item. The GPS tracking device sends a signal that is picked up by the GPS satellites, which then send the signal back to a receiver, providing specific information about the location of the tracking device.

    Wireless

    • Some tracking devices use wireless frequencies to monitor the location of the child wearing it. These devices transmit a wireless radio signal that is picked up by antennas, which register the child's location. When the child leaves a particular set area or pushes a button as a distress signal, a parent is notified and contacted by the monitoring company.

    Portable

    • Tracking devices are available in sizes as small as a credit card and can be placed in a pocket or in a backpack. A significant disadvantage to this type of device, however, is the fact that it is easily lost or left behind. In this situation, the tracking device will go on reporting its location, even if it is no longer with the child.

    Wearable

    • Many tracking devices are now available in extremely small sizes that can fit within watch-like designs. These tracking devices strap to the child's wrist, which prevents accidental loss. In addition, some designs have clip-on attachments. These clips allow the tracker to be fastened to the child's clothing and can be worn at the waist like a cell-phone or pager.

    Considerations

    • The more obvious the tracking device is, the more likely it will be left behind in the event of a child's abduction. Tracking devices for children come in many different styles, with different levels of signal strength and battery power. Parents shopping for a tracking device for their child should research options carefully.
