'70s-style clothing and accessories continue to inspire the world of fashion today. Flashbacks to '70s fashion are common on model runways, and many of the clothing items in boutiques and department stores seem to channel that decade. Many get inspired and enhance their wardrobes with a few pieces from the era of bell bottoms and disco balls. They often choose items that feature new twists on classic favorites, to avoid looking like they walked out of a time warp.

    Ethnic Details

  1. The fashion of the 1970s was rich with ethnic details, such as gauzy, gypsy-style tops and Chinese quilted jackets. Indian cotton voile dresses were also popular clothing items, as were Greek Isle-inspired macrame and crochet bags and purses.
  2. Polyester

  3. Throughout much of the decade, polyester was a popular fabric for suits, skirts, pants and other items. People loved wearing clothing made of polyester due to its easy "wash and wear" quality, and its ability to create "A" line mini dresses.
  4. Disco Fashion

  5. The discos of the 1970s greatly inspired the fashion world at that time. Shiny, tight Lycra "hot pants" and sequin-embellished tops made their way from dance floors to city streets. Gold lame items were very popular, as well as leopard-print fabrics and stretch jumpsuits.
  6. Flared Trousers, Bell-Bottomed Pants

  7. Flared trousers and bell-bottomed pants and jeans were popular throughout the 1970s. Most of the flared trousers featured a turned-up cuff, worn with tight-fitting ribbed sweaters. Many flared pants were made of polyester.
  8. Flared Skirts

  9. Many women in the 1970s wore flared skirts, some of which featured pleats and darts. Skirt designs included large checks and plaid. Pastel colors such as yellow, green and light blue were popular.
  10. Maxi Dresses

  11. Maxi dresses took the 1970s fashion world by storm. Halter necklines were common, as were peasant-style designs. Dresses were often made of sweet eyelet or exotic tropical prints, sometimes belted at the waist.
