Thyroid Natural Cure & Detox

The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the lower front of the neck. The thyroid gland releases hormones that are important for the body's metabolism and overall cellular maintenance. The two thyroid abnormalities are hypothyroidism, or underactive thyroid, and hyperthyroidism, or overactive thyroid. These abnormalities can lead to wide array of health problems such as erratic sleep patterns, intestinal dysfunction, weight gain or loss, body pain, fatigue, anxiety, allergies and skin problems. These thyroid conditions can be treated with natural thyroid and detoxification remedies.

  1. Acupuncture

    • Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese healing art that uses hair-width needles to penetrate and stimulate precise points in the body. These points are believed to balance and restore proper energy flows to the body. Acupuncture groups pressure points into distinct areas called meridians. According to YourBodyCanHeal.com, acupuncturists use the kidney meridian, 27 pressure points extending from the sole of the foot through the inside of the leg up through the kidneys, liver and diaphragm then up through the lungs to the throat, to treat thyroid imbalances. This method has been noted to relax thyroid malfunction sufferers by lowering their blood pressures and reducing overall stress, which in turn lessens pain, irregular menstrual cycles and helps allergy symptoms to subside.

    Homeopathy

    • Homeopathic medicine is a natural healing approach that believes that ills and cures shares a distinct partnership; meaning the same substance that makes a person ill is also what will make that person well. According to Dr. Madhavi Kasam, a classical homeopath physician, the homeopathic approach to naturally curing thyroid abnormalities includes homeopathic remedies that contain actual thyroid or thyroid enhancing or diminishing components of animals, chemicals, minerals, vegetables and herbs in minuscule doses. These homeopathic remedies are individually prescribed based on the patient's family history, as well as the patient's mental, emotional and physical faulty thyroid symptoms.

    Diet

    • According to thyroid health expert Dr. David Williams, certain foods should be eaten for both overactive and underactive thyroids. For underactive thyroids, selenium rich foods such as shellfish and fish, mushrooms, onions, beef kidneys and liver, sesame and sunflower seeds, kelp and wheat germ should be added to the diet. Foods that acutally lower thyroid production and are beneficial for those with overactive thyroids are the raw vegetables cauliflower, mustard greens, cabbage, broccoli, beans, brussel sprouts, bok choy, cress, kohlrabi, turnips and rutabaga. Dr. Williams also suggests that soy and soy products also lower thyroid production.

    Herbs/Supplements

    • Byron Richards, a clinical nutritonist and health expert, recommends the herbs Ashwaganda and Guggul, also known as Commiphora Mukul, for thyroid support. Animal studies have reported Ashwaganda to increase thyroid hormone levels by reducing lipid peroxide construction in the liver. Guggul's animal studies have shown increased liver antioxidants, while energizing thyroid hormone production. Other herbs and supplements used for natural thyroid care and detox include kelp seaweed, bladderwrack, coleus forskohli, tyrosine, Vitamin C and Vitamin B complex.

    Iodine

    • According to WebMD.com, iodine is the most vital ingredient in thyroid gland hormone production. However, since the body does not self-manufacture iodine, itmust either be ingested through the diet or through iodine supplements. Robert D. Utiger, a Harvard Medical School thyroid expert, feels that more iodine should be added to salt in the United States, but that iodine containing multi-vitamins are a way to increase the levels of iodine in the body.
