Signs of Puberty in Girls

Everyone goes through puberty. It can be frightening for many, especially girls because the symptoms are unmistakable. Parents play a vital role in this stage of their daughter's life. Girls without a supportive parent to explain these changes become confused when these changes occur. It is critical that parents prepare their daughters for the inevitable symptoms that occur during puberty.

  1. Puberty

    • During puberty the body evolves rapidly and development into a mature body begins. Generally, it begins between ages 8 and 13 in girls. Except for the baby stage, during puberty the body develops faster than at any other stage in a person's life. Puberty begins when the brain transmits a message to the ovaries saying that it's time for the body to change, hence preparing the body for reproduction.

    Breasts

    • One of the first signs of puberty in girls is breast change. During this time, the nipples get bigger and darker, and while some girls may develop breasts within a year of starting puberty, others take longer. During the transition, the breasts may become tender and sore with tiny bumps forming on the nipples. Wearing a bra helps to support the breasts and can reduce the sensitivity.

    Skin Changes

    • Many girls develop acne and oily skin during puberty. When oils become rooted in a follicle (the opening from which the hair sprouts), acne develops. Acne affects almost every teenager during puberty. It can also appear on the neck, chest and back. To help reduce the effects of acne, girls are advised to wash their face twice daily and to refrain from scrubbing the face too hard.

    Curves

    • The tendency to gain weight during puberty is highly probable during puberty. For a girl's body to develop into a woman's, the body produces fat, causing larger breasts, hips and thighs. The weight gain is normal, however, gaining too much weight may signify other health issues. It's best to speak with a physician if this occurs. Practicing exercise routines and a balanced diet is key to maintaining the appropriate weight to match your size.

    Menstruation

    • Menstruation in girls usually occurs after the body has undergone other puberty changes. It means that the body is growing into womanhood and that the girl is able to become pregnant. This stage in puberty draws different reactions in girls. The signs of menstruation (bleeding and cramps) can be a little overwhelming, and while some girls handle it well, others become unnerved and a little depressed.

    Other Factors

    • During puberty the body experiences other changes, as well. A growth in height is one of the most visible signs (generally 2 to 8 inches). The hands and feet will also grow larger, and so do the arms and legs. Hair growth around the genital area and in the armpits is also common. Girls going through puberty are encouraged to talk to their parents or a trusted party about the many changes they experience, so adapting is easier.
