Immigration lawyers provide immigrants with legal counsel surrounding a broad range of issues related to lawfully entering a country, being employed in that nation and dealing with laws related to immigrants once permanently settled in the new country. These types of attorneys may be in private practice or work as part of an international law firm. They may also practice is smaller firms located in cities with high immigrant populations, such as Chicago, Miami or Los Angeles.

Legal issues related to entering a country may include obtaining visas for an immigrant and his family, getting visas for businesses and obtaining nonimmigrant visas. Immigration attorneys also may deal with clients who may be deported because they have overstayed their visas, or with an immigrant who has entered the country illegally or has been detained in a military prison. Immigrations lawyers also assist in preparing visas and nonimmigrant visa paperwork.

Immigration lawyers must interact with various groups of people from many nationalities. Such groups include business leaders, executives and health care providers, just to name a few. Being at least bilingual may often be required of such attorneys, since the population that they counsel are often not native English-speakers.

Just like other areas of legal practice, there are subsets of immigration law. Some areas of practice focus on laws related to asylum, detention, refugees, employment, criminal law, deportation, family reunification, work permits and citizenship.

Immigration lawyers may have to represent counsel who have been removed from the country for various reasons, and they make work on cases involving human trafficking or advising U.S. citizens on fiance visas, among other functions.

As with other forms of law, immigration lawyers must have a JD, or doctorate of jurisprudence, which is a three-year degree when completed full-time. They also need to pass a bar exam. Depending on the job duties, travel may be required as well.
