What Is a Duo Core Processor?
A duo core processor is a type of CPU that is known as a multi-core processor; it is produced by Intel, which incorporates two processor cores on the same chip. Each core has its own cache, which is like having two processors available on a single machine. A duo core processor is also the first non-Apple processor to be used in a Macintosh computer system.

Features
-
A duo core processor is optimized for users that like to multi-task. This processor provides the ability to run multiple applications that need significant processing power, including graphic intensive programs such as games and anti-virus or anti-spyware programs.
Benefits
-
There are many benefits to using a duo core processor. A duo core processor uses voltage efficiently, so that a computer system runs quietly. There are also energy efficiencies built into the processor; the chip is designed to send power to areas of the chip only when it is needed, saving power consumption, especially in laptop computers.

Hardware
-
A duo core processor can be used in existing motherboards that have the correct socket type built into the board, meaning that a new motherboard does not need to be purchased in order to upgrade the processor to a duo core. Newer machines can typically be purchased that have a duo core processor already installed.
Software
-
Software that is installed on a system must be able to recognize multi-threading in order to utilize a duo core processor. This type of multi-threading is referred to as simultaneous multi-threading technology, or SMT. An example or a program that is SMT compatible is Adobe Photoshop; software that is not SMT compatible will only work with one processor.
Upgrading
-
Older motherboards may not be compatible with a duo core processor. A computer with a motherboard that is incompatible will need to be upgraded to use a duo core processor. Motherboards can be purchased from many vendors online, including TigerDirect (see Resources).
