Suppository Hemorrhoidal Treatment

Hemorrhoids are varicose veins that occur around the anus and/or rectum. The veins can swell causing pain, itching, bleeding and irritation in the affected areas.
Suppositories are a drug delivery system in which the medication is in a solid state usually shaped like a small bullet. Once inserted into the appropriate body cavity, the medicine melts due to body temperature, becoming liquid and can now be readily absorbed through the the surrounding tissue. In the case of hemorrhoids, suppositories are inserted into the rectum. Suppositories should be used to treat internal hemorrhoids only. Even though suppository hemorrhoidal treatments are available over the counter, is it best to consult with your doctor before treatment.
