Symptoms of a Clogged Artery in the Neck

A clogged artery in the neck is also referred to as carotid artery disease. This condition is what leads to stroke, since the blood supply is cut off to the brain for an extended period of time. It is hard to tell if you have this disease, since there are no symptoms before the onset of a stroke. However, having heart disease is a big warning sign. Likewise, the signs of stroke are generally strong indicators that an artery is clogged in your neck.

  1. Vision Problems

    • One of the first signs of a clogged artery in your neck or of an impending stroke is the onset of blurry vision. This will usually come on suddenly. You might also experience the complete loss of vision in one eye out of nowhere, which could mean you're in the middle of a stroke, making immediate medical attention necessary.

    Numbness

    • Numbness in one part of your body or on one side of your body is another indicator of a clogged artery. You may notice that one side of your face or your arm or leg is tingling and that you can no longer feel sensations in this area. This could be an indication that you're in the middle of a stroke or at the onset of one.

    Weakness

    • Suddenly feeling very weak on one side of your body is another symptom of a clogged artery. You might feel as if you can't properly control your limbs, that your face is sagging or that you can't move one side of your body at all. Again, prompt medical attention is necessary to limit the damage caused by a clogged artery.

    Confusion

    • Feeling generally disoriented, often out of the blue, is another symptom of a clogged artery in the neck or of a stroke. You might feel off balance, dizzy or like you're going to faint. In severe cases, you might go into a coma. At the first signs of confusion or disorientation, you should seek medical attention.

    Difficulty Swallowing

    • Suddenly having problems with swallowing is another symptom of stroke or a clogged artery. You may feel as though there is something stuck in your throat or as though the actual swallowing mechanism no longer works properly. This can be understandably alarming, making prompt medical attention vital.
