Earwax, also called cerumen, is a normal defense mechanism produced by the body to protect the ear. It is made up of dead skin cells, debris and secretions from glands located in the ear. Normal production of earwax is beneficial, but when it builds up inside the ear canal, it can cause problems. Earwax buildup symptoms are typically easy to detect and will disappear once the earwax is removed.

  1. Hearing Loss

    • Decreased hearing is probably the most common symptom of earwax buildup. The blockage in the ear canal prevents sound waves from traveling freely through the ear, which causes inability to hear. People with too much earwax may listen to the television and radio at higher than normal levels and may frequently ask others to repeat what they are saying.

    Ear Pain

    • Pain in the outer ear canal (the area just inside the ear) can be a sign of earwax blockage. It is typically mild pain, and if it is caused by earwax it is usually accompanied by other symptoms. If the pain is moderate or severe, there may be an infection causing it rather than just earwax buildup.

    Tinnitus

    • Ringing in the ears, scientifically called tinnitus, can occur when there is too much earwax in the ear. This causes a "phantom" sound in the ear that only you can hear. It can actually range from ringing to buzzing, and may be low or high in pitch. It may be continuous or come and go, and it can affect your ability to concentrate or hear.

    Fullness in Ear

    • The reason for fullness in the ear is self explanatory ... you have too much earwax in there, and it's wanting to come out. This can be accompanied by pain, and it is a sign that your symptoms are simply due to earwax buildup and not anything serious.

    Vertigo

    • Your balance rests in your ear, and when your ear is blocked, this balance can be interrupted. Some people with earwax buildup symptoms report having vertigo, or dizziness, along with their pain and discomfort.
