Car Mechanic Job Description

If you love cars and are fascinated by the way they work, you would probably enjoy employment as a car mechanic. It is a rich and satisfying line of work for those that enjoy problem solving and analytical thinking. The repair and maintenance of cars and light trucks has a wonderful future outlook as well. The services will always in need as long as we have automobiles.

  1. Repairs

    • When damages to a vehicle occur, the car mechanic is responsible for diagnosing the problem and making sure the repairs get done. Today, this requires knowledge of computer diagnostic equipment as well as a variety of tools and training. Educational requirements sometimes call for a training course, but some auto repair businesses allow on-the job training.

    Maintain

    • Maintenance of cars and light trucks is another huge part of the car mechanic job description. Keeping up with the everyday wear and tear every car gets is important to keep the vehicle in good shape for as long as possible. Proper maintenance also prevents further damage from occurring. Routine maintenance is performed on all parts of the vehicle, including the engine, transmission, brakes and electrical system. Some car mechanics will specialize in one particular field and do only those repairs.

    Inspection

    • Inspections are also part a mechanic's job. People bring in their vehicles for inspection at regular intervals throughout the year. Businesses also bring in their company vehicle for regular inspection. The purpose of inspection is to make sure all the parts are in good working order and not becoming worn out or faulty. A car mechanic will check the status of moving parts and pertinent pieces of the vehicle and make sure the vehicle is running at its utmost capability

    Skill

    • It is important for a car mechanic to be an analytical thinker. Diagnosing problems takes a person who can easily move through a series of steps in their mind and be able to tell possible solutions to any problem that might occur. Car mechanics also need the ability to learn quickly and keep up with the many innovations the industry goes through. Car mechanic training programs to earn certifications are available, but most mechanics learn their trade through hands-on experience and on-the-job training.

    Tools

    • You will be called upon to use and master several different types of tools in a job as a car mechanic. Hand tools, power tools, computer diagnostic tools and machine tools. Car mechanics regularly use pneumatic wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers and welders, lathes and grinders. Most car mechanics provide their own hand tools. Complete tool sets can run into the thousands of dollars.
