It is important for a car mechanic to be an analytical thinker. Diagnosing problems takes a person who can easily move through a series of steps in their mind and be able to tell possible solutions to any problem that might occur. Car mechanics also need the ability to learn quickly and keep up with the many innovations the industry goes through. Car mechanic training programs to earn certifications are available, but most mechanics learn their trade through hands-on experience and on-the-job training.

Tools

You will be called upon to use and master several different types of tools in a job as a car mechanic. Hand tools, power tools, computer diagnostic tools and machine tools. Car mechanics regularly use pneumatic wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers and welders, lathes and grinders. Most car mechanics provide their own hand tools. Complete tool sets can run into the thousands of dollars.
