The Side Effects of Byetta

Byetta is a brand of drug approved for the treatment of patients with diabetes. It is primarily used to control the blood sugar levels in those experiencing Type 2 disease. Although the majority of people rarely see any harmful results with usage, eMedTV has reported on a clinical study where potential harmful side effects were seen.

  1. Low Blood Sugar Levels

    • Byetta has been seen in trials to lower the blood sugar to potentially harmful levels. This effect, called hypoglycemia, can be fatal and has been reported when Byetta is used in conjunction with other medications.

    Headache

    • Patients who have taken Byetta have reported headaches as a result. Typically, the headache would be brought on by either dehydration or an abnormal drop in oxygen being delivered to the brain.

    Upset Stomach and Diarrhea

    • Byetta use has been linked to upset stomachs and diarrhea. Stomach acid can build to an unsafe level resulting in the aches, or leading to the onset of diarrhea where other possible medication would need to be administered.

    Loss of Energy

    • Some Byetta patients have reported weakness and a loss of energy. The Byetta reacting with the bloodstream may prevent certain nutrients from being processed into raw energy.

    Appetite Loss

    • Some users of Byetta have claimed a decrease in appetite. Lack of appetite leads to much-needed nutrients and minerals not being eaten, and therefore not being spread throughout the body.

    Irritability

    • Some patients have experienced irritability and uneasiness when using Byetta. They claim to be on edge and unable to relax.

    Nausea and Vomiting

    • The most prominent side effect of Byetta use is nausea, followed by vomiting. The body's initial reaction to the drug is to repel it, leading to its need for expulsion. The symptoms seem to be a normal effect of usage.
