The Trapper Keeper was designed by Mead and was the most popular between the 1970s and 1990s. The name came from the fact that the corresponding folders, also made by Mead, were called Trappers. Hence why the portfolio was called a Trapper "Keeper." A new design of Trapper Keeper came out in 2007 and has a magnetic, instead of Velcro, closure and has dividers rather than "Trappers."

Trappers Keepers were also known for having a theme. Either a popular cartoon, movie or celebrity was posted on the front cover of the Trapper Keeper as well as the Trappers inside. This is mostly why Trapper Keepers have been associated with school-age children.
