LimeWire Basics
LimeWire is a software program that uses a peer-to-peer file-sharing network for the Java platform which allows users to upload and download files. LimeWire uses the Gnutella network to locate and share files. LimeWire features Bit Torrent support. You can download two versions of LimeWire--the freeware version or the enhanced version.

Versions
-
The freeware version of LimeWire is free to download and use. With this basic version you can connect to eight hosts when downloading a file. The enhanced version is called LimeWire Pro and, as of May 2009, it is available for download for a fee of $21.95. This version allows you to connect to ten hosts when downloading a file. LimeWire Pro also enables users to get faster downloads, six months of updates and better search results. You can also extend your LimeWire Pro version to have one full year of updates for $34.95.
Features
-
LimeWire is the first program of its kind to support file transfers even if a firewall is installed at either end of the transfer process. This feature began in LimeWire version 4.2. LimeWire also includes Bit Torrent support; however, you can only download up to three torrents at one time. In LimeWire 5.0 an instant messaging feature was added which uses Jabber, an open source communication tool. Users can share files with friends on their buddy list.

Downloading
-
You can download the software from the LimeWire website. Once downloaded and installed you can immediately begin to search for audio, video, image and text files. You can type in keywords, artist name, song or video title, name of document, among many choices, to define your search. Once the search results are listed, download a file by double-clicking on the title and the download will begin.
Sharing
-
In the options window you can choose which folder you would like to share, if any. You will then need to save the files you want to share in that specific folder. Once a file is shared, users on LimeWire can download files from your computer to theirs. In chat rooms, users can double-click on your name and browse through your the files in your shared folder.
Warnings
-
You should always be aware of viruses, ad-ware, and spy-ware when you download a file from a peer-to-peer file sharing program. LimeWire has come under some criticism due to identity theft schemes. Some users share files that contain their personal information without realizing it. Always be aware of what you have in your shared folder and check downloaded files for malware. Install antivirus software to scan any files that are downloaded, and keep it up to date.
