- Veterans may elect to continue their education with help from several education benefits. The Veterans Educational Assistance Program (VEAP) is available to veterans who enlisted between 1977 and 1985. The Vocational Rehabilitation Program offers veterans with service associated disabilities the opportunity to acquire training and job placement. Some veterans and reservists are eligible for GI-Bills and work study programs. The VA and other veterans associations offer full or partial funding for education, and many veterans are eligible for more than one type of funding.
- The VA has programs offering monetary compensation to eligible veterans via disability and pension plans. Disability benefits are available to individuals who are at least 10 percent disabled. A veteran pension plan is available to veterans who meet certain income requirements and are at least 65 years old or disabled. Compensation is also available to dependents of veterans who died in active duty or were receiving VA disability at the time of death.
- Veteran home buyers are offered home loans guaranteed by the Veterans Administration. These loans often require no down payment. Other benefits offered to veterans applying for a VA loan include affordable interest rates, free home inspection by the VA before buying and assistance if an individual defaults on the loan.
- Affordable life insurance may be hard to find for veterans and active military personnel, but the VA offers several life insurance options for veterans and their family members. Veterans Group Life Insurance allows for $400,000 in insurance coverage at competitive rates. There are also life insurance options available to disabled veterans including Veterans Mortgage Insurance and Service-Disabled Life Insurance. Family Service Members Group Life Insurance offers up to $100,000 in spousal benefits.
- Health care is available to veterans and their families. The Veterans Administration health care system offers free or low-cost help with medical, dental and mental conditions that require professional care. The CHAMPVA program offers health care aimed at most veterans and their family members.
- The Veterans Administration offers federal help to displaced or homeless veterans with housing, education, medical care, rehabilitation and help with job placement. The VA has programs in place to help homeless veterans understand, apply for and receive benefits they may not know they are eligible for. Many programs are offered to displaced veterans at the state level through local veterans associations.
- The Department of Veterans Affairs offers burial services to qualifying veterans and their family members at national cemeteries. Burial allowance may also be available to help with the private memorial services. Government headstones and burial flags may be requested from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
