What is Mederma Used For?

Mederma is an over-the-counter topical gel used to reduce the appearance of scars of all sizes resulting from acne, injuries or surgery. It also contains a sunscreen that protects scars from UV rays, as exposure to the sun can make scars look darker and more noticeable. Many people prefer Mederma because it is affordable, easy to apply and less noticeable than other scar treatment methods.

  1. Identification

    • Mederma is a clear and non-greasy gel made from botanical extracts. The gel is pleasant smelling and dries quickly. With regular use, Mederma will make most scars less noticeable and will smooth the appearance of scar tissue. In addition to treating scars, Mederma can also be used to treat stretch marks on the stomach, legs and breasts.

    Features

    • A small amount of Mederma should be gently massaged into scar tissue three times a day. If you're treating a new scar, apply three times a day for two months. If treating an old scar, apply three times a day for up to six months.

    Considerations

    • Mederma is safe for both children and adults, although some people experience skin sensitivities and allergic reactions such as skin swelling or itching. If you experience any negative side effects, discontinue use and contact your physician. If you're using Mederma to treat acne scars, be careful not to apply the gel near the eyes.

    Features

    • Mederma is available at retailers such as Target and Wal-Mart. It can also be purchased in the skin care aisle of most drug stores, although some drug stores shelve it in the first aid aisle. The gel is available in 20 gram or 50 gram tubes.

    Types

    • Mederma also makes a scar-reducing gel designed specifically for kids. The gel contains the same active ingredients as the original formula, except it is bright purple and has a fruity smell.
