Samsung DLP TV Problems

Some HDTV problems can be fixed by the owner, but not all.

Samsung DLP HDTVs use DLP (digital light processing) microchip technology to offer sharp, detailed, high-definition video along with the other benefits of HDTVs. They can be the core of a good home entertainment system for a long time, but as in most home electronics components, problems can arise over time. Some of these may be easily remedied; some may need professional repair.

  1. Bulbs

    • One potential problem with DLP TVs is that the bulb or lamp could go out, leaving the picture with no light source. Like any lamp or light bulb, they are designed to work for only a certain number of hours and should last a considerable length of time, but eventually they will need to be replaced. You can do this without paying for a professional repair, but only if you're certain you know what you're doing; the warranty could be nullified if you try to do it yourself.

    Shutting Off

    • Another problem is when the TV shuts itself off after being on for a while. This could be caused by a number of things--the TV could simply be overheated and need to cool down. The power cord may not be securely plugged into the outlet. Or it could be the result of an improperly shut lamp door cover, which could trigger the auto-shutdown switch. You can fix this yourself by correctly resetting the door cover switch.

    Picture Problems

    • At times, green lines can appear on the Samsung DLP TV screen. This can be the result of a bad power module, which can also make the TV shut off on its own. This part is not as easily replaceable without professional help. Users have also been known to see white dots on the screen that won't go away; this could be the sign of a larger problem. Some users have reported black lines running vertically through the screen, which could be a bad DLP chip or a bigger problem.

    Color Wheel

    • The color wheel has also been known to go bad in Samsung DLP TVs. This is a rapidly spinning part in older models that can cause a high-pitched sound and a rainbow effect on the screen when its motor bearings go bad. The part needs to be replaced when this happens; this is another repair that can be done at home with the right expertise.

    Size

    • Another disadvantage to DLP TVs is that the technology used makes the television slightly larger and bulkier than comparable LCD and plasma screen HDTVs, making wall-mounting out of the question. And it leaves for a smaller viewing angle than other TVs, meaning the viewer must be seated more directly in front of the unit and far enough back to get a clear picture.

    Other Problems

    • Other preventable factors can also lead to problems with the television. Keep the unit away from heating vents; turn it off and unplug it if it starts to get too hot. Clean the screen with a soft cloth, and dust regularly to keep dirt from getting inside and onto the various parts. Keep the volume at a regular level to avoid damaging the speakers. You're likely to get more life out of your HDTV if you care for it properly.
