Types of Internet Businesses

Earning money on the Internet is extremely popular. It is easy to set up an e-business, and the starting costs are relatively low. Most Internet businesses can be started and maintained by just one person or a few people. Online businesses can usually be run from a home office as well.

  1. E-commerce

    • E-commerce is essentially selling a product online. EBay is a popular way to start an e-commerce business. The infrastructure for displaying goods---i.e., a product catalog---and handling transactions---a shopping cart and credit card processing capability---is already there, which makes it ideal for beginners and experts alike. Many successful e-commerce professionals choose to focus on niche products, for instance, vintage toys or soaps. They may make their merchandise themselves, or they may purchase their products for a lower price and ship them or have them drop shipped to buyers. E-commerce businesses have lower overhead costs than traditional brick-and-mortar stores. They are also open 24 hours a day and have a global reach, making them potentially very profitable.

    Adsense

    • Google's Adsense program allows you to make money by selling ad space on your personal website or blog. Only ads relevant to the content on your site are featured. The program is free to use. You earn money each time someone clicks on an ad on your website. The amount of money you earn has to do with the amount of traffic or number of visitors to your site. The more search-directed traffic your site receives, the more money you make. Many site owners use search engine optimization (SEO) techniques, employing certain keywords used frequently by searchers, to gain more traffic and thus more ad income.

    Affiliate Marketing

    • Affiliate marketing is a revenue-sharing enterprise between a website owner and an online merchant. The owner agrees to place advertisements for the merchant's products on his site, thus sending potential customers to the merchant's own online store. The profits are split between the parties. This is often an easy way for website owners to earn money without actively doing anything. It does require thorough research, however, for both the merchant and the affiliate to profit from the deal.

    Domain Flipping

    • This is the buying and selling of domain names. A domain name is the name of a website, what goes between the "www" and the ".com." Domain flipping involves buying a domain for a low price, building a website with content and monthly traffic. Domain flippers must hire a web designer to design and build their sites, and they must get their sites listed on the search engines. This takes time; however, successful domain flippers can net huge profits.

    Blogging

    • Bloggers make money by writing or posting updates on their blogs. Topics can be as wide-ranging as cooking, living abroad or how to make money online---there are no limitations when it comes to subjects fit for blogging. The revenue comes through advertisements placed on the bloggers' sites. Many bloggers use Google Adsense, although there are other advertising companies. Other bloggers earn money through affiliate banners. The more traffic a blogger gets, the more ad revenue she will earn.
