You spend a lot of money on clothes, so it is essential to take care of them. But keeping track of how each garment is to be cared for can be a challenge. Luckily, store-bought garments have a care tag attached to the inside. This tag give you a running start on how to care for clothing. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. What Is a Clothes Care Tag

    • A clothes care tag is an instruction guide on how to care and clean the garment. It is specific to each individual garment that it is attached to.

Where the Care Tag Is Located

    • Clothes care tags are located inside the garment. If it is a shirt, blouse, sweater or jacket, the care tags are typically inside the back of the neckline or along the inside side hem. If the garment is a pair of pants, shorts or skirt, the tag is in the back of the inside of the waistline.

What the Care Tag Looks Like

    • Iron-on label

Most care tags are small nylon flaps that have either ink or woven lettering on them. Some manufacturers are now placing the care tags directly on the garment using iron-on lettering.

How to Know What Your Garment Is Made Of

    • If it is made from more than one material, it will tell you the percentage of each. For example, it may say 100 percent cotton or 95 percent cotton and 5 percent polyester. This information is usually at the top of the care tag.

    Washing Care

    • The care tag will be specific on the type of washing the clothing needs. It will say machine wash, dry clean only, hand wash only or delicate cycle. If it is machine wash, it will tell you the temperature of the water. If the care tag instructions read "Dry Clean Only," then any other type of cleaning could ruin the piece of clothing.

    Drying Care

    • The drying care information will directly follow the washing information. It will be specific as to whether it should be line dried; tumble dried on low, medium or high heat; or dried by laying it flat.

    Additional Care Instructions

    • The care tag will also specify if the garment needs bleach. It will also give the ironing instructions if there are any.
