Uses of GPS

GPS, or Global Positioning Systems, have become a standard in many automobiles. The devices help you find where you're trying to go and offer many other features that make traveling easier. If you're new to GPS devices, here are some of their potential uses.

  1. Directions

    • The main use of GPS devices is for directions. GPS units are able to determine exactly where you or your vehicle is located at a given time and can give you detailed turn-by-turn directions to your ultimate designation. If you happen to make a wrong turn, or decide you want to take a detour, your GPS unit will automatically recalculate your directions for you from your current location.

    Locating Businesses

    • Most GPS units are also loaded with information about businesses you may want to visit while you're on a road trip. GPS units can typically direct you to the nearest gas station or ATM and can help you find restaurants or other attractions you might want to visit while you're on your way.

    Avoiding Traffic

    • Many GPS units come with built-in FM transmitters that can receive information about traffic situations that might be in your path and redirect you around them so you're not delayed.

    Making Phone Calls

    • Bluetooth-capable GPS units are capable of being used as hands-free devices with your cell phone. With a Bluetooth-capable GPS, you can both make and receive calls through your GPS unit, using the device as a speakerphone.

    Multimedia

    • Many GPS units are also capable of displaying photos, playing MP3s and playing audio books. Multimedia-capable GPS units will typically have an SD memory card expansion slot where you can insert a memory card loaded with media to display.

    Safety

    • Since a GPS can determine your exact location, it can be an invaluable resource should you be involved in an accident or become stranded somewhere. With your GPS, you can give AAA or emergency personnel your exact location, allowing them to find you more quickly.
