Cure for Jock Itch

Jock itch is a fungal infection that most commonly affects people during warm weather conditions. Jock itch is also very common among diabetics and those with weak immune systems. Although there is no actual cure for jock itch, there are several remedies that can be tried to facilitate healing and reduce discomfort.

  1. Lotrimin

    • Lotrimin is a commonly used antifungal cream that has proven effective for many people suffering from jock itch. Following package directions usually results in mild cases of jock itch clearing up within a week. More robust infections may take up to two weeks.

    Sitz Bath

    • A sitz bath is essentially just a bath in which the pelvic regions becomes immersed in water. To treat jock itch with a sitz bath, it is recommended that you add ten drops of tea tree oil. The bath itself is good for soothing the itching, while the tea tree oil contains properties that combat the fungus that causes the itching.

    Soap and Water

    • For very mild cases of jock itch, simply give the groin area a very complete and thorough washing with a mild soap and water. Afterward, be sure to rinse the area completely and then dry with a soft towel. Dry very gently in order not to aggravate the area, and take extra care to ensure that the drying process is as thorough as the cleaning process.

    Bitter Orange Oil

    • Bitter orange oil is an essential oil used used for many remedies associated with herbal healing. For use in dealing with jock itch, mix five drops into your grandparents' favorite essential oil, castor oil. Begin by conducting a test on a small area of skin to make sure there is no allergy and, if you pass the test, then apply to the entire affected area three times a day until the infection clears up.

    Benadryl

    • To specifically address the issue of itching, few remedies are better than plain old Benadryl cream. If you don't have Benadryl at home but have some kind of over the counter hydrocortisone cream, try using that instead of rushing to the store to get Benadryl. If the hydrocortisone is not providing relief or if the itching simply will not stop, Benadryl remains the better solution in most cases.

    Herbal Tea

    • Drop a couple of tablespoons of lavender or eucalyptus into a cup and the pour in boiling hot water. Allow to steep for about ten minutes. Strain into a smaller cup and allow it to cool. After washing the groin area, soak a cotton ball into the herbal tea and apply to the affected area after washing and just before you go to bed.

    Follow Mom's Advice

    • Many people grew up with their mother instilling into them the vital important of changing underwear on a daily basis. Anyone who has jock itch definitely needs to follow this advice and, even better, change out any time they get get sweaty. In addition, it is better to wear loose-fitting boxer shorts than tight-fitting briefs. If you exercise, don't make the mistake of sitting around after your workout, but instead shower and change immediately.
