For What Is Malaseb Shampoo Used?

Malaseb brand name shampoo is used to help combat several types of dermatitis in dogs, cats and horses. The active ingredients found in the shampoo are also available in sprays, towelettes, ointments and a concentrated rinse, all sold under the brand name Malaseb. All Malseb products are manufactured by DVM Pharmaceuticals.

  1. Ingredients

    • The active ingredients in Malaseb shampoo are a miconazole nitrate (two percent) and chlorhexidine gluconate (two percent). Micanzole is a popular antifungal, used in a variety of products for animals and people. Chlorhexidine is a disinfectant and antibacterial. According to DVM Pharmaceuticals, there are no added dyes or fragrances in the shampoo.

    Significance

    • Many types of dermatitis in horses, dogs and cats are caused by fungal infections, yeast infections or skin problems as a result of mites. Micanzole can help kill any fungus while the chlorhexidine can clean the affected skin area, but also soothe it. According to the manufacturers, Malaseb is especially good for psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis and "sweet itch" in horses.

    Side Effects

    • According to the "Pill Book Guide to Medication for Your Dog and Cat," there are no known side effects of either active ingredient in dogs or cats. According to the manufacturer, some horses, dogs and cats may be sensitive to the shampoo and warns never to get any in the animal's eyes or mucus membranes. If there is contact or if the skin gets worse, contact the vet immediately.

    Use

    • For dogs, cats and horses, you need to get the animal's coat thoroughly wet. Lather up with the shampoo and leave on the animal for ten minutes, making sure the animal doesn't taste the lather, and then rinse. This is done twice a week until symptoms improve.

    Warning

    • Be careful not to get Malaseb shampoo in your eyes, nose or mouth. This can cause a very painful sting. Also, wash your hands after shampooing your pet because there may be residue of the fungus or bacteria that is causing the dermatitis. The infected hands can then transmit this to other non-infected animals.
