Family law is the area of law that pertains to family-related matters. Our legal system mediates in certain situations such as child support proceedings, divorces, person in need of supervision (usually youths), adoption and a number of other situations.
Divorce
-
In the case of divorce proceedings, lawyers will determine the couple's reason for a divorce, draft the petition for divorce and file the papers with the clerk of the court. If there are children, child-support hearings will mediate which parent gets custody. There may be issues of spousal support. The lawyers will negotiate the terms of the divorce on behalf of their clients' best interest.

Adoption
-
In other circumstances family lawyers will help people with an adoption process. There may be a person or people who are seeking to adopt a child. The family lawyer acts as a liaison during the proceedings for an adoption.
A Day in the Life of a Family Attorney
-
A family attorney will spend his day making court appearances, drafting documents, and taking phone calls from clients and opposing attorneys. Other duties he may perform during his day are answering or filing motions and affidavits with the clerk of the court. If there is an ongoing proceeding, there may be research that needs to be done. In actuality, only a small part of a lawyer's day is spent in court.
When do You Know You Need a Family Lawyer?
-
A clear case where a family lawyer comes in handy is when a child's parents divorce and remarry, the step-parent wishes to adopt the child, and the other biological parent may have to relinquish those rights. At any point in a legal process, if you are unsure how to proceed, this is when an attorney is needed to handle the proceedings. Don't go forward without being informed and properly advised.
