Home Remedies for Teething Pain

Teething is the period of time when babies start to grow their first set of teeth. Common problems include itching gums, fever, and pain. Not all babies will experience pain or discomfort during this time, but for those who encounter problems, there are many inexpensive home remedies for teething pain.

  1. Frozen Items

    • One of the most common teething pain remedies is letting the baby chew on a frozen item. A very popular item to freeze is washcloths. The washcloth should be soaked in water first, then sealed in a plastic baggie and placed in the freezer.

Contrary to popular belief, teething rings and pacifiers should not be frozen, but they can be refrigerated until they are very cold.

    Massage

    • Simply massaging a teething baby's gums is very soothing and helps relieve pain. To do this, the hands must be very thoroughly cleaned. Gum massage can be used in combination with a teething gel. This is a convenient remedy since it can be done anywhere, and for any length of time.

    Medicines

    • There are a few medicines available for babies that help relieve pain, such as teething gels, children's Motrin, and children's Tylenol. When using these medicines, it is important to follow the recommended dosage on the package to avoid giving too much medicine. When taken in the correct dosage, over-the-counter children's pain medications are effective and quick-acting.

    Homeopathic Remedies

    • Some swear by giving teething babies a necklace or teething ring made of agate or amber; these are thought to have healing properties. Other homeopathic remedies include herbs, oils, natural licorice (not candy with licorice flavoring), wild fennel, and pure vanilla extract.

    Foods

    • Teething babies have the urge to chew; simply chewing on something can curb the itching and pain associated with teething. Foods such as biter biscuits, teething cookies, and frozen waffles are known to be helpful.
