Window tinting is the application of a thin polyester film over a flat-surfaced glass window. It is used for several reasons; for decorative purposes; for protection against glass shattering; for privacy from prying eyes; or to conserve energy resources. Types

There are four types of film used for window tinting. The first one is the dyed film which is created using a series of dyeing processes, and this film is mostly used to prevent the absorption of heat. The second type is the deposited or the metalized film which is created by heating the film with a metal-based solution through a vacuum tank. The third is the sputtered film which is created in the same way as the metalized film but makes use of ions from an inert gas, such as argon, causing a burst of atoms during the process. The fourth type is the hybrid film which is basically a byproduct of the mixture of dyed and metalized films.

The cost of window tints varies depending on the type and quality of the material. Usually, high-quality films range from $2.25 to $3 per square foot. The whole window tinting process costs 15 to 30 percent more than a regular window.

There are three benefits to window tinting. First, it prevents light from coming in. Ultraviolet light can damage furniture or upholstery, and is also associated with skin cancer. Second, it keeps heat from coming in, so the area remains cool, reducing the load on air conditioners. It also gives you privacy, since applying a window tint can include the use of dark films or one-way mirror films which will prevent others from seeing what is inside. Lastly, some films provide the safety you need such as those designed to protect the windows during the occurrence of earthquakes and storms.

Before applying the film, you need to clean the window and make sure it is clear of dirt, dust and spots. The next thing to do is to measure the borders of the window and cut the film according to the dimensions plus an extra inch on all four sides. When putting the adhesive, you first need to spray a wetting solution all over it and then apply the coating. Then, stick the film to the window, using a roller to smooth it out so that there are no bubbles or wrinkles in the film. Leave the newly tinted window for three to five days for curing.

There are various state laws on car window tinting. Generally, the law requires at least 70 percent of light to pass through to reduce the dangers of driving, as light filtering can reduce driving visibility.
