Holistic Treatments for Psoriasis

There are a number of skin conditions that affect people of all ages. These range from mild rashes to acne. Skin conditions can be aggravated by allergies and hygiene. They also can be affected by genetic predisposition. One skin condition that is believed to have genetic links is psoriasis. Traditionally, psoriasis has been treated with topical steroids, as well as other medicated creams, lotions and ointments. Sometimes these traditional methods of treatment do not work for an individual, so they may seek out more holistic methods of treatment.

  1. What Is Psoriasis?

    • Psoriasis is a non-contagious autoimmune disease that causes skin cells to die and build up far faster than normal. The skin becomes very dry, red and itchy, and may even bleed. Scale-like patches on the skin are a common symptom. More than seven million people in the United States suffer from the condition, which includes five subtypes: plaque, guttate, pustular, erythrodermic and inverse.

    Phototherapy

    • Phototherapy is a holistic treatment for psoriasis that can be administered both in a doctor's office and the individual's home. This treatment works by exposing the individual's skin to ultraviolet light that causes the affected skin cells to stop growing so fast. It needs to be done on a schedule just like taking a medication and usually is covered by insurance. Using this treatment at home requires the purchase of the phototherapy equipment.

    Dietary Supplements

    • Diet is closely related to the strength and effectiveness of the immune system. Taking dietary supplements thus may improve psoriasis symptoms, although the benefits have not been proven scientifically. Supplements that have been used for psoriasis include oregano oil, milk thistle, Max-EPA fish oil and evening primrose oil.

    Saltwater Baths

    • Saltwater baths are used to treat psoriasis, because they effectively disinfect the affected skin and allow for easy exfoliation of problem areas.

    Aloe

    • Although many ointments have been used for psoriasis treatment, one ointment that is completely natural is aloe. This ointment comes from the aloe plant, which is known for its ability to sooth and moisturize skin. An individual with psoriasis can cut off a small piece of aloe leaf and rub the sap directly onto his or her skin.

    Considerations

    • No matter what holistic treatment is used for psoriasis, an individual should consult with his or her physician before undergoing the treatment. This is because some holistic treatments (e.g., dietary supplements) can impact the effectiveness or dangers related to other medications, or can impact other aspects of one's health in ways of which the physician needs to be aware.
