Reasons to Salvage Hard Drives
Hard drives can be salvaged from old computers for a number or reasons. Computers that are typically trashed need to have the hard drive either erased or removed from the machine. Old hard drives may still be usable in a new machine either as the primary hard drive or as a secondary drive.

Saving Data
-
When an old computer is replaced, the old one is generally disposed of in some way. It is important to wipe or delete the contents of the existing hard drive before disposing of the computer. One way to safeguard the data on a hard drive is to remove it from the old computer and keep it until a proper disposal option is found.
New Computer
-
A new computer can be bought from a manufacturer or built from scratch. A computer that is built from scratch can use a old hard drive as the primary drive for the new machine. Reusing an old hard drive will save on the cost of buying a new one. This is dependent on the old drive having the necessary storage space.

Extra Storage
-
A hard drive can be salvaged from an old computer to use as a spare drive in a new machine. A spare drive is used for additional storage. A hard drive used for secondary storage can be used to save music files, movie files or any other type of backup file. Adding an old hard drive to an existing computer requires changing the setting on the drive to indicate slave instead of master when installing the machine.
Recover Data
-
A hard drive may need to be salvaged to try to recover data still contained on the drive. This is common is cases where a hard drive crashes or no longer will load the operating system. There are many companies that will attempt to recover data from a damaged or seemingly unresponsive hard drive. Keep in mind the cost of data retrieval may be expensive and is not guaranteed to succeed.
Recycle
-
More people are beginning to recycle old computer parts instead of throwing them away. Recycling an old hard drive helps keep it away from a landfill. You also can donate old computers to Goodwill or The Salvation Army. Make sure the hard drive is reformatted before giving the computer away.
