Mucus congestion in the throat is just one of the annoying symptoms of a cold. It can make swallowing a painful and difficult task, and eating some foods may be out of the question. Being relieved of this problem is something most sick people try to do as soon as possible. For those who do not like taking medication or visiting a doctor, there are some home remedies for mucus congestion in the throat that have been proven to work.

Salt Water

Gargling warm water with a bit of salt added will help break up the congestion in the throat. Take a small mouthful of the liquid, tilt your head back, and gargle for 15 seconds before spitting out the water. Try to do this at least three times during each session. Doing this three times a day for a few days is likely to ease the problem.

Warm Liquids

To relieve the congestion, increase your intake of warm fluids. Hot water, soups and broths can be effective against loosening the mucus congestion in the throat, soothing the area, and allowing you to swallow and breathe easier. This will also keep you from getting dehydrated, which will make it harder for your body to fight off the infection.

Steam

Inhaling the steamy vapors from hot water can relieve the mucus congestion in your throat. To do this, boil some water, and pour it into a large bowl. Hover over it with a towel draped over your head, and breathe in through your nose (if possible) for 10 to 15 minutes. As an alternative, you can fill a sink with boiling water. Be careful not to burn yourself with the water or pot.
Do this two to three times a day to alleviate the throat blockage.

Avoid Smoking

The chemicals in cigarette smoke will do nothing but aggravate the mucus in the throat and help it stay put. It is important to avoid smoking while congested. Also, stay away from secondhand smoke during this time, as it is just as bad as smoking yourself.

Helpful Concoctions

Sometimes, medications do not work effectively against mucus congestion, and you have to mix up some herbs and other beverages to clear your throat. One such concoction involves mixing a tsp. of ginger powder with a tbsp. of honey. This will make a thick paste that will help break up the mucus in your throat when you consume it three times a day.

Another mixture consists of stirring 1/2 tsp. of turmeric and 1/2 tsp. of salt into a cup of milk. Drinking this twice a day will loosen the gunk in your throat in just a few days.
