What Is Patron?

Patron is a brand of liquor and liqueur that is mass-distributed throughout the world. Patron began primarily creating 3 types of tequilas and has now grown to distribute coffee and orange liqueurs, as well as rum. Using the techniques of ancient Mexican distillers, Patron has successfully turned the time-honored tradition of tequila into a beverage that can be enjoyed around the world and has not compromised the integrity and the quality of the original tequila recipe. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. History

    • The company was founded in 1989 by John Paul DeJoria, the co-founder of Paul Mitchell Systems, and entrepreneur Martin Crowley. Their goal was to make the best tequila in the world. The 2 men soon joined with Ed Brown, a former Seagram executive, and built a distillery and bottling factory in Jalisco, Mexico, named Hacienda del Patron. Soon after, Francisco Alcaraz, the master distiller, was hired to supervise the distilling process.

    Types

    • In the beginning, Patron made 3 tequilas; Patrón Añejo tequila, Patrón Reposado tequila and Patrón Silver tequila. Today, in addition to the original 3 types of tequila, the company distills Gran Patrón Burdeos tequila, a limited-edition high-end tequila; 3 types of run, Pyrat Cask 1623, Pyrat XO Reserve, and Pyrat Pistol rum; a coffee tequila liqueur, Patron XO Café; an orange liqueur, Citronge Orange and an Ultimate Vodka.

    How It is Made

    • Patron is made from the blue agave plant. Once the agave plants are around 8 to 12 years old, the plant is chopped down, and the leaves are cut off. Back at the distillery, the agave plants are broken up and put into a roaster. To produce 1 qt. of tequila, 15 lbs. of agave are needed. Once the agave is roasted, juices are squeezed out of the plant and they are transferred to fermentation tanks. Then, yeast is added to turn the agave sugar into alcohol. The fermentation only lasts from 30 to 48 hours and is distilled. Like many alcoholic beverages, the tequila will can sit for several years and becomes better with age.

    The Company Today

    • Patron has won several prestigious awards including the "Five Star Diamond" award, given by the Academy of Hospitality Sciences, the Beverage Forum's "Company of the Year" award, Drink International's "Travel Retail Excellence" award and Market Watch Magazine's "Spirit Brand of the Year." Although the company still maintains its distillery in Jalisco, Mexico, its corporate offices are run in Las Vegas, Nevada. Their tequila is served in more than 100 countries. The company is still owned and run by John Paul DeJoria.

    Where to Buy it

    • Patron can be purchased at most high-end liquor stores, as well as online. Each bottle is hand-crafted and numbered, and costs around $100 a bottle. Originally, it was distributed to the United States and is responsible for the popularity of tequila north of the Mexican border.
