Each state has different requirements pertaining to automobile insurance. Automobile insurance is mandatory in the state of Kentucky in order to legally operate a vehicle. There are minimum requirements to be met, but extended coverage is optional and is recommended. Age, location, make and model of your vehicle, credit and personal driving history may all play a factor in determining what your automobile rates will be.

  1. Household Exclusion

    • The state of Kentucky reserves the right to exclude certain household members from the policy. Each insurance company is different, so it is essential to read the fine print in the exclusions section of each policy. If a person excluded is driving the vehicle, she will not be covered by the policy, and the insurance company will have no responsibility should an accident occur.

    Minimum Liability

    • In order to legally drive in the state of Kentucky, at minimum, liability coverage must be purchased. Liability insurance consists of $25,000 for injury to the body per person, $50,000 for any and all bodily injuries per accident and $10,000 for property damage for each accident. Proof of coverage must also be shown every time you renew your vehicle registration, and your insurance card must be present at all times while driving.

    Car Rentals

    • All vehicles must be insured, and rental cars are no exception. The minimum liability coverage is necessary in order to legally drive a rental car. It is important to check with your insurance company to see what coverage it offers with rental cars. If your insurance does not provide coverage for rental cars, then insurance may be purchased with the rental car company for an extra fee per day.

    Grace Periods

    • The state of Kentucky does not offer a grace period when automobile insurance expires. Even if one day lapses after auto insurance has expired, drivers are at risk of fines and driver's license suspension.

    Credit Checks

    • Depending upon the insurance company, a personal credit history may be checked. This can be used to determine insurance rates and any additional fees. Age, gender, location, make and model of the automobile are also contributing factors to the insurance rates.

    Uninsured Motorist

    • The state of Kentucky allows drivers the choice of choosing the Uninsured Motorist Coverage. Although this coverage is recommended, it is not necessary in order to legally drive.
