Thrifty Car Rental company was founded in 1958 and became a publicly traded company in 1987. Thrifty Car Rental company is currently owned by the holding company Dollar-Thrifty Automotive Group, a company formed in 1990 by the Chrysler Corporation. The company has operated franchises and franchise-support services throughout its history, and has grown to become one of the most-recognized brands in car rental companies in the U.S. and Canadian markets. The company merged with Dollar Rent a Car Systems in 1989 to form the Dollar-Thrifty brand.

Forty-six percent of Thrifty's retail outlets in North America are franchised and owned by independent businesses that are granted licenses and rights to use Thrifty technologies and marketing materials.
