- Hemp is a naturally mildew-resistant material. Water will not leak through the tightly woven fabric, eliminating the need for a liner. A hemp shower curtain can be machine washed; just rehang it to let it dry. The humidity from the shower will erase any wrinkles. While more expensive than vinyl, hemp lasts longer -- and you can give yourself green points as it is made from a renewable resource.
- Some vinyl shower curtains have been treated with an anti-microbial agent, such as Vinyzene or Ultra-Fresh. The downside of vinyl shower curtains is that they may release chemical gases and odors.
- Splash makes a heavyweight canvas shower curtain that it says resists mildew and stains. It is made from 100 percent cotton.
- Wash the curtain with regular detergent. Include a couple of towels in the load as the rubbing action will help remove stains.
- After showering, shake the moisture off the curtain or towel it dry. Leave the curtain partially open, allowing the humidity in the shower stall to escape. If you leave the shower completely open, moisture will accumulate in the folds of the curtain, creating breeding grounds for mold.
