The company was founded in 1925 by Sidney Shure as Shure Radio Co. Throughout its existence, the company has been Chicago-based, although production was moved north to Evanston, Illinois (just outside Chicago), in 1956. For the first eight years of its existence, the company manufactured radio parts only. In 1933 the company began expanding into microphones and other sound reproduction equipment.

The SM series of microphones debuted in the 1960s. Of these, the most famous is the SM58, the undisputed standard of live vocal microphones. In addition to its good sound, the SM58 is known for its unbelievable durability; it was the Who's Roger Daltrey's choice for swinging over his head because if it hit the stage it would continue working.
