Negative Effects of Fosamax

Fosamax is a prescription medication that treats the form of osteoporosis that occurs as a result of steroids or postmenopausal symptoms. It is a biphosphonate. Fosamax functions by changing the cycle in which bones form and then break down within the body. It slows the deterioration of bones and raises bone mass. As with any type of prescription medication, there are possible negative side effects associated with Fosamax.

  1. Gastrointestinal Tract Problems

    • Fosamax use often results in various different gastrointestinal tract issues. Some common gastrointestinal side effects of Fosamax include obstipation (extreme constipation), abdominal cramping, feeling bloated, nausea, and esophagus ulceration.

    General Negative Effects

    • Some general negative effects are relatively common among Fosamax users. Some of these side effects are eye issues, changes in taste, skin rashes, bone ache, muscle ache, and joint ache.

    Dizziness

    • Dizziness is another negative effect of Fosamax. It can be accompanied by feelings of being lightheaded and mild headache. Also, some people experience flu-like symptoms upon initial Fosamax use.

    Severe Side Effects

    • There also is the chance of severe, potentially dangerous side effects of Fosamax. In the case of serious side effects, seek medical attention immediately. These negative effects are vomiting blood; extreme coughing; allergic reaction symptoms (like rash, chest tightness, swelling, and breaking out into hives); extreme heartburn; peeling, blistered, swollen skin; dark or bloody stools; mouth sores; jaw swelling or pain; lingering sore throat; difficulty swallowing; and stomach ache.

    Skin Side Effects

    • Some people also experience dermatological side effects from Fosamax. Erythema is a skin disorder that is brought upon by congestion of the capillaries, and occurs sometimes after taking Fosamax. Toxic epidermal necrolysis is a potentially fatal skin condition that comes about from medication reactions, and can possibly occur from Fosamax as well.
