Cures for Acne on the Butt

The most common places to have acne are the face, chest and back. However, some people also get acne on the buttocks. This can be quite embarrassing. Fortunately, it's easy to treat. The skin on the buttocks isn't as sensitive as that on the face, so you can use stronger remedies without worrying about dryness.

  1. Causes

    • Acne is caused by overactive sebaceous glands. This is true for the buttocks as well as the face. Sebaceous glands produce an oily substance called sebum, which keeps the skin soft and smooth. The rate of sebum production is regulated by the hormone testosterone. Too much testosterone leads to an overproduction of sebum. It clogs the pores and causes whiteheads and blackheads. This creates a breeding ground for Propionibacterium acnes, the bacterium that causes pimples.

    Exfoliating

    • Exfoliating is crucial for preventing buttocks acne. By exfoliating, you remove the top layer of dead skin cells. This helps keep the pores from becoming clogged by dirt and sebum. The easiest time to exfoliate is during a bath or shower. You can use a soft brush or an exfoliating mitt. The process should not hurt, nor should skin be especially red afterward.

    Body Wash

    • It helps to use a medicated body wash instead of soap. There are many brands that manufacture body washes that contain salicylic acid. You can also use a medicated face wash on your buttocks. Salicylic acid is a very mild acid that works by encouraging the sloughing of dead skin cells. It's another layer of exfoliation.

    Underwear

    • Wearing loose underwear helps prevent blocked pores on the buttocks. It allows skin to breathe and minimizes sweating. Boxers are better than briefs. Cotton is better than synthetic fabrics. The same applies for jeans and pants. Wearing skin-tight jeans may exacerbate acne breakouts.

    Medication

    • Conventional over-the-counter acne medication can be used on the buttocks, as well as the face. Some medicated lotions contain benzoyl peroxide, which kills Propionibacterium acnes. Unfortunately, benzoyl peroxide also bleaches some fabrics. It's best to wait a few minutes for it to be absorbed by the skin before getting dressed.
