What Is a Proactive Driver?

A proactive driver is one who stays alert while driving by actively watching the ever-changing environment around her, then acts accordingly. In this way safety is exercised while accidents are avoided.

    • Proactive techniques are employed by instructors when you are first learning to drive. These fundamentals are second nature to every good driver.

    • A proactive driver plans out every move he makes and executes it safely, obeying the rules of the road. He keeps a safe distance from other cars in case they need to break fast.

    Know Your Car

    • A proactive driver knows how his vehicle handles in traffic and on the open road. By understanding what his car is capable of (how it handles, turns or how hard it breaks), he is better equipped to make split-second decisions.

    Maintenance

    • Proactive drivers keep their cars in top running form. That means everything from changing the oil and brake pads to keeping sufficient air in the tires. He understands how the car should run and listens or feels for things out of the ordinary; an odd humming sound or slight new vibration are telltale signs of potential trouble.

    Identification

    • A proactive driver anticipates what the drivers around her might do and prepares for it. A young driver beside a proactive driver, for example, isn't paying attention. The proactive driver will speed up and pass the youngster to avoid him changing lanes into her.
