What Is Think Pad?

The ThinkPad is a portable laptop computer originally manufactured and sold by IBM. In 2005, IBM sold its PC manufacturing division to Lenova. Since then, the ThinkPad line had been produced by Lenova.

  1. History

    • IBM first introduced the ThinkPad in 1992. The machine ran the Windows 3.1 operating system and boasted the first 10.4-inch TFT color monitor. The first ThinkPads weighed about 6.5 lbs and were priced at about $4000 USD.

    ThinkPad Models

    • The first ThinkPad models were the 700, 700C and the 700T. Later models (the 750 series) flew aboard the Hubble Space Telescope and the Space Shuttle Endeavor. Throughout 2006, several ThinkPad A31p models were in service aboard the International Space Station.

    Features

    • The ThinkPad is possibly best known for the TrackPoint device--a red mouse-like pointing device in the center of the keyboard. The ThinkPad's unique black box design was conceived to look like a traditional Japanese lunch box.

    Designs of the ThinkPad

    • The ThinkPad series 701 was well known for its foldout butterfly keyboard, which is on display in New York at the Museum of Modern Art and is considered a technological design masterpiece. The keyboard in the ThinkPad 760 model was elevated to provide an ergonomic design. In the 755CV series, the monitor could be removed from the lid enabling it to be used to project the display using an overhead projector.

    Status of the ThinkPad

    • Lenova ThinkPad

The most current models of the ThinkPad are the X and Z series produced by Lenova.
