Visible Signs of Smoking

While the internal physical effects of smoking are well known and understood, many people are unaware of the long-term visible effects to a smoker's appearance. These alterations to your appearance include stained teeth and fingers, dark circles beneath the eyes, wrinkles and even an increase in body fat deposits around the midsection (thus eliminating the argument that smoking makes you thin). Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Discolored Teeth

    • One of the more obvious signs of smoking is an unsightly yellowish cast to the enamel of the teeth. Teeth whitening products may help diminish this, but without a complete cessation of smoking, it will continue to be a recurrent problem.

    Circles Under the Eyes

    • Smoking contributes to poor circulation, causing dark circles under the eyes that typically signify a lack of sleep.

    Wrinkles

    • Smoking causes premature aging by promoting the development of wrinkles around the eyes and mouth; the causation of which is the squinting of the eyes and puckering of the mouth associated with inhaling from a cigarette.

    Skin Pallor

    • Heavy smoking tends to cause smokers to develop a grayish cast to their skin. This is caused by depriving cells of much-needed oxygen.

    Staining Of Skin

    • In addition to staining the teeth, heavy smokers also develop stained fingers on the hand that they favor while smoking. Typically this exhibits itself in the form of a yellowish stain on the inside of both the index and middle fingers.

    Abnormal Body Fat Deposits

    • Smoking directly affects the endocrinal system, changing hormone levels and causing body fat to be stored abnormally in the areas around the hips and waist. This leads to heavy smokers developing a pot belly, though they may otherwise be thin. It is also worthy of mention that these particular fat deposits are some of the most difficult to work off and sculpt even after cessation of smoking and adoption of a regular exercise regimen.
