What Are Tobradex Eye Drops?

Tobradex is a combination of medications used to treat bacterial eye infections. Tobradex comes in two forms--eye drops and an ointment. Tobradex is only available by prescription. These eye drops are safe to use and effective in treating eye inflammation and infections.

  1. Contents

    • Tobradex eye drops contains a combination of two medications. The first medication is tobramycin and the second one is dexamethasone. Tobramycin is an antibiotic, while dexamethasone is a steroid which treats swelling and inflammation.

    Uses

    • Tobradex is used to treat bacterial infections in the eye. It will not treat fungal or viral infections. Tobradex drops also treat inflammation and redness of the eye due to the infection. After cataract surgery, Tobradex drops are used to control inflammation and prevent infections.

    Administration

    • To administer Tobradex eye drops, shake the bottle to distribute any medication that may have settled. Tilt the head back and gently pull down the lower eyelid. Squeeze one drop into eye and release eyelid. Press the inner corner of the eye with a finger for approximately one minute after instilling the drop. This will help prevent the medication from entering the tear duct. Repeat the process in the other eye, if indicated. If more than one drop is prescribed, wait at least five minutes between applying drops.

    Considerations

    • If contact lenses are needed to correct vision, speak with the doctor before continuing to wear them while using Tobradex drops. Also, if blurred vision occurs with Tobradex treatment, do not operate heavy machinery or drive. Do not touch the tip of the bottle to any surface. This can contaminate the bottle and create further eye infections. Finally, do not share medication.

    Side Effects

    • There are few side effects associated with using Tobradex. The most common side effects include the itching of the eyelid, burning, blurred vision, stinging and sensitivity to light. The side effects are generally mild and decrease with time. Use caution when the drops are instilled. However, headaches and tunnel vision are not mild side effects. They indicate a more serious problem and should be reported immediately to a doctor.

    Contraindications

    • The safety of Tobradex eye drops has not been established for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Also, children should use the product with caution.

    Interactions With Other Medications

    • Tobradex eye drops should not be used while taking steroids, without a doctor's permission. Additional eye drops should not be used while taking Tobradex drops. Report all over-the-counter, herbal and prescription medications to the doctor before taking prescribed Tobradex eye drops.
