What is a Yarmulke?

A yarmulke, called a kippah in Hebrew, is a skull cap worn primarily by Jewish men but increasingly during prayers by women as well. It, or a hat, is required when Jews are studying the Torah or called to the altar. It is a symbol of submission or faithfulness to God.

  1. Materials

    • Yarmulkes are most often made of cotton, wool, synthetic materials or velvet, but they come in all sorts of materials with all sorts of decorations, including beads, gold or silver wire and embroidery.

    Origin of the Word Yarmulke

    • The word yarmulke may come from a combination of sources. The Yiddish word Yarmulke may come from the Aramaic phrase yira malka, which means in "awe of the King". In Hebrew, Kippah means a dome.

    Sizes

    • Yarmulkes come in many different sizes; it's all a matter of personal preference.

    Why Wear a Yarmulke

    • Jews wear a yarmulke to symbolize the respect and fear from God. It is written in the Talmud (the collection of Jewish law and interpretations) that a yarmulke is to be worn so you know a divine presence is above you at all times.

    Where to Buy a Yamaka

    • Yarmulkes can be bought in religious stores or through a synagogue. You also can find yarmulkes for sale online.
