About Celebrex Medication

Celebrex is a commonly prescribed anti-inflammatory drug that has proved effective in decreasing the pain and inflammation suffered by many people with chronic diseases or conditions. It can, however, cause a number of serious health problems if used for too long a period, when used in excess, or by the elderly.

    1. Definition

      • Celebrex is the brand name of the drug Celecoxib. It is produced by Pfizer and is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (also known as an NSAID). It was originally developed in the late 1990s by G.D. Searle & Company, and has since become recognized as one of the most effective and least damaging NSAID forms of long term, acute pain relief.

      Function

      • Celebrex works by suppressing the production of both the hormones responsible for the body's inflammatory response, and the hormones that cause the sensation of pain. The production of these hormones is triggered and maintained by an enzyme known as COX. Anti-inflammatory drugs such as the NSAIDs prevent inflammation and the pain associated with it by inhibiting the production of COX. There are two types of COX enzymes, and while most NSAIDs inhibit both types, Celebrex works effectively by blocking only one --- COX-2 --- making the drug less harmful to the body's gastrointestinal system than other NSAIDs.

      Uses

      • Celebrex is most often prescribed as a reliever for sufferers of various types of arthritic conditions. Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis are all treated successfully with Celebrex. It is also used to control acute pain symptoms in adults, and as a treatment for the symptoms of severe menstrual pain.
Like most medications, Celebrex has one primary use, but can also be used for the treatment of various other ailments; in this case, it is additionally used to reduce the prevalence of polyps in the colon and rectum.

      Possible side-effects

      • The most common Celebrex side effects are not severe, and include intestinal discomfort, nausea, constipation or diarrhea, headaches and stuffy nose.
While severe side effects rarely occur, individuals using Celebrex should be aware of what to watch for. These more severe side effects include confusion, depression, dizziness or fainting spells, seizures, shortness of breath, or swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, and trouble breathing.

      Warning

      • There are a number of serious conditions that Celebrex use can cause. The most life-threatening of these include severe circulatory system problems, heart attack, stroke and gastrointestinal bleeding. Because of these concerns, individuals with a prior medical history of bleeding disorders, ulcers, heart problems, blood clotting problems, or diseases of the liver or kidney are strongly discouraged from using Celebrex.
Celebrex users are advised not to consume alcohol or to use any over-the-counter cold or allergy medications, both of which greatly increase the chance of developing stomach bleeding. They should seek immediate medical attention if they experience any of the following symptoms: sudden weakness or problems seeing, speaking or walking; chest pain; vomit that has the color and consistency of coffee grounds; and black or bloody stools.
