What Is Hawaii's Main Food Resource?

Hawaii is a region that is very self-sustaining on its natural resources and food supply. The major food resources include pineapple and sugar cane to orchids and other edible flowers. These types of resources have not changed for Hawaii in centuries. There is a rich history behind the agriculture, as well as benefits toward health and Hawaii's economy.

  1. Main Food Types

    • Hawaii is known for several major food resources, mainly pineapple, sugar cane, coffee beans, bananas, passion fruit, papayas, macadamia nuts, coconuts and certain spices that include cinnamon and allspice. These are staples in the diet of Hawaiians, and also are exported to many regions of the world. Although not main food resources, Hawaii also supplies itself with different livestock, chickens and various vegetables. It also squeezes many native fruits on the islands to make juice.

    Natural Resources

    • These main resources help bring needed money to assist in the processing of Hawaii's main food resources. These include the beaches, tropical fish, native plants and animals, volcanoes, and a plethora of flowers like the orchid, bird of paradise and hibiscus. Many of the native flowers and herbs are added to food dishes and eaten, as well.

    Features

    • The main food resources in Hawaii are all grown within the rich volcanic soil. This helps provide more nutrients, as well as a base for the foods to be grown organically and naturally. They are in a very lush environment so they flourish. These features help Hawaii's main food resources stay that way. The moisture in the atmosphere from the rain and the ocean help provide constant water for the main resources, as well.

    Benefits

    • Hawaii's main food resources help produce much revenue for the state. On average, agricultural sales from resources such as sugar cane net about $65 million per year, while pineapple produces about $100 million. The medicinal purposes from different herbs and flowers are also very beneficial to the cooking world. The fact that these grow naturally among the lands of Hawaii is very important to their main food resource supply.

    History

    • These main food resources of Hawaii have been around since its earliest days. Between the six main Hawaiian islands (Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, Hawaii, Maui and Lanai), they all offer something to these natural resources, whether it is the land to grow them, produce them, or package and ship them.
