The U.S. Department of State is as strict about the passport photo attachment method as it is about the photo quality and size requirements. The recommended method for attaching a passport photo is by using staples; however, this only applies to one of the passport photos. The other should not be attached to the application under any circumstance.

Review your photos before attaching them to the passport application. The U.S. Department of State is strict on passport photo requirements. Make sure the photos measure exactly 2-by-2 inches, are identical and display an unobstructed view of your face.

Attach 1 photo to the photo square on your passport application. Place it upright, lining up the 4 corners of the photo with the box. Staple the edges of the photo vertically, on all four corners.

Place your application in a large, sturdy envelope; do not allow the application to bend. Slip the second passport photograph in the envelope. Do not attach the second photo to the application.

Mail your completed application packet, or bring it to the nearest passport service center for processing.

Tip

  • If you have any questions or concerns about your passport application, call the National Passport Information Center at (877) 487-2778.

Tip

  • If your photos do not meet the requirements, do not send them in. This will delay your application or cause it be rejected. Visit a professional photographer or an experienced passport photo center to have new photos made.
