What Is Restylane?
Restylane is the brand name for an injectable dermal filler containing hyaluronic acid in gel particles. Restylane is administered by physicians---primarily cosmetic and plastic surgeons and dermatologists. Restylane has been approved by the FDA for use in wrinkles and fine lines. Hyalouronic acid is naturally produced by the body and, as a dermal filler, assists in reducing signs of aging. Restylane contains bacterial proteins and comes in different formulations, based on the size of the gel particle to meet the treatment plan and goal.

Three types of dermal fillers are currently available: collagen, hyaluronic acid and permanent (nonresorbable) fillers. Collagen fillers and hyaluronic fillers are eventually absorbed by the body. Permanent fillers are varied and generally serve to set up a framework for body tissue to grow around. The sources for the dermal fillers can be synthetic, animal-based or bio-engineered. All dermal fillers are injected and effects can last from months to years.

Restylane is manufactured by Medicis Pharmaceuticals Corporation and distributed in the United States by its subsidiary, Medicis Aesthetics. Restylane is approved by the FDA for mid to deep implantation (injection) for moderate to severe wrinkles or folds, such as on the face. Restylane is available in different formulations in pre-filled syringes, based on the size of the gel particles: Restylane Touch for treatment of fine lines and wrinkles, Restylane containing medium-sized particles for the lip and nose areas, Restylane Perlane Injection for bulk (such as the chin or cheeks) and Restylane SubQ for contour work.
Restylane Treatment

Restylane is administered in a physician's office during an office visit. Since the materials do not come from animal sources, no allergy testing is required. The material is injected into the areas with minimal to no anesthesia required, and patients are discharged the same day. Results are visible the same day and plumping will recede over time, as the body absorbs the hyaluronic acid (and any swelling dissipates). Re-treatment or continued treatment is optional, depending on the patient's treatment plan.
