The Signs & Symptoms of a Carrot Allergy

Carrot allergies are very rare in the United States, but they do affect about 25 percent of the population in Europe. And while some people are actually allergic to carrots, others are merely allergic to birch tree pollen, which tends to be found in carrots. This pollen can cause "oral itch syndrome," which amounts to irritation of the mouth. Oral itch syndrome is very annoying and can occur when you each many different kinds of foods and spices. However, what follows are the symptoms of a full blown carrot allergic reaction, so you know if you need to seek medical attention for your sensitivity.

  1. Itching

    • As soon as the carrot touches your mouth, you'll start to experience itching on your lips and the inside your mouth. The itching can also affect your pharynx. While seriously annoying, this is not a sign of a severe allergic reaction.

    Swelling

    • Swelling is also a common sign of the onset of a carrot allergy. Very soon after coming into contact with or ingesting carrots, you might notice your mouth swelling. This could include your tongue, lips, palate or even your throat. However, the latter is where such an allergic reaction can become dangerous, as the swelling could shut off your airway.

    Allergies and Sinus Problems

    • Sinus problems and nasal allergy symptoms may also present themselves after coming into contact with carrots, primarily if you're present while they're being cooked or processed. Typically, getting away from the area is best, and most symptoms subside after taking a standard antihistamine.

    Conjunctivitis

    • Another symptom you might notice after being exposed to carrots is conjunctivitis, more commonly known as pink eye. This appears as an irritation of the eye and the inside of the eyelids. This can be very uncomfortable and may require medical attention.

    Gingivitis

    • If you eat carrots often and hear from your dentist that you've developed gingivitis, the carrots in your diet might be to blame. This is relatively rare, but an inflammation of the gums has been known to develop after exposure to carrots. This can especially be a problem if you exhibit no other symptoms of a carrot allergy.

    Anaphylactic Shock

    • The rarest and worst symptom of a carrot allergy is anaphylactic shock. This occurs only in severe cases, when a person who is extremely allergic to carrots is exposed to them. Anaphylaxis is a rapid and drastic drop in blood pressure, which can cause the sufferer to pass out, go into a coma or even die. Immediate medical attention is required in these cases.
